X = 0.75 /beta/' (a silicon aluminum oxynitride) and Sibeon (silicon beryllium oxynitride) are promising die materials. In sessile drop tests in contact with molten silicon, beryllium contamination was <10 ppM and aluminum contamination 50 ppm. A shaping die of the Sialon material has been successfully fabricated and delivered to JPL. This X = 0.75 /beta/' Sialon exhibits an almost constant wetting angle of 37 degrees. The dissolution of aluminum in molten silicon is unfluenced by the oxygen content of the molten silicon and the material should be used under inert atmosphere conditions with a suitable crucible material that does not affect the Sialon--silicon equilibrim.
