In concentrations of 10-/sup 6/-10/sup -5/ M, mezaton (phenylephrine hydrochloride) has a distinct radioprotective and postradiation effect on cells in an SOC (cynomolgus monkey heart) culture. The radioprotective effect is manifested by an increase in dose (D/sub 0/) and extrapolation number (n), and the postradiation effect, by an increase only in n and D/sub q/. The ..beta..-adrenolytic agent anaprilin (inderal) enhances both effects of mezaton, while the ..cap alpha..-adrenolytic agent, tropaphen eliminates both. This confirms the fact that the radioprotective action of adrenomimetics and modification thereof by adrenolytics can be expressed on the cellular level.
