Effects of sulfate aerosols upon human pulmonary function. Final report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5522445

Both normal and asthmatic adult male volunteers were exposed for 2-hour periods (with intermittent exercise) to ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4), ammonium bisulfate (NH4HSO4), and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) aerosols, of size distributions and concentrations intended to simulate the worst cases likely to occur in ambient pollution episodes. Standard lung physiology tests were performed by the subjects upon entering and prior to exiting from a carefully controlled environmental chamber. Aerosol concentration and size distribution were determined by on-line computer/aerometric monitoring system, and gravimetric and chemical analyses were performed on impactor and total filter samples. Little or no evidence of adverse health effects were observed from two-hour exposures performed on two or three successive days.
