Gas production is generating much activity in S. Mexico. Most important developments include the following: (1) The area's 2 absorption plants are ready for another expansion, as more gas becomes available and the need arises to supply increasing demands. Turbo- expansion plants will be built at both locations--a 200 MMcfd unit at Cd. Pemex and a 175 MMcfd facility at La Venta. (2) The 24-in., 790 km Cd. Pemex-Cd. de Mexico gas line is being looped. When expansion is completed, this line will have a nominal capacity of 1 billion cfd. It will be Latin America's largest. (3) Gas flaring is coming to an end. New field-compressors are helping Pemex to fully utilize associated gas production previously wasted. All associated gas is now being piped to La Venta, where liquid recovery has increased from 6,000 to 11,000 bpd. (4) Near Cd. Pemex, new natural-gas fields are being developed at a fast pace. Hormiguero, a wet-gas find located in swampy terrain will have 27 producing wells before the end of this year, with a combined potential of 200 MMcfd.
