Since 1966, Mexico has stepped up its reservoir- engineering work as a basis for planning secondary-recovery projects. La Venta is one of the fields in Mexico's Southern Zone where studies of this nature have been conducted by Pemex. A geological survey determined the presence of many fault blocks with a total of 82 oil- impregnated sand bodies. It was decided to conduct a pilot waterflooding operation in sand C-1, a reservoir located in Block 1. Reservoir data and production statistics are given, together with the field history. Water will be injected into the producing interval through former producing wells which were shut down after water encroachment invaded the producing zone. This type of operation was adopted because the steep-dipping formations will offer a chance to take advantage of gravity for driving the oil updip. The pilot waterflood will consist of injecting 12,000 bpd of salt water discharged from the La Venta oil-desalting plant. A filtering system will be installed to remove the oil before the water reaches the injection pumps.
