Empresa Colombiana de Petroleos Ecopetrol has launched the first step in a 12-stage program which ranks high among the world's largest secondary-recovery projects. Ecopetrol expects to recover at least 200 million bbl of secondary oil from the ''C'' zone of its famous La Cira Field. The reservoir has been divided into 12 separate sectors; and future work is scheduled to undertake about one new sector each year. Ecopetrol presently takes 21,000 bpd from the La Cira ''C'' zone and the same formation in the adjoining Infantas Field, and proposes to increase production rate to 40,000 bpd by means of water-injection work now under way, hoping to maintain the 40,000 bpd rate for many years to come. Ecopetrol is presently injecting 30,000 bpd of water into its pilot area, and some 4,900,000 bbl of secondary oil have already been recovered. Production in this pilot area now averages almost 7,000 bpd compared to 2,500 bpd before flooding. Sand control is a problem not only in producing wells, but also in injection wells. At this time, gravel packing appears to be the most promising means of keeping sand under control.
