Waterflooding will make Barrow Australia's biggest oil producer

The partners in West Australian Petroleum Pty., Ltd. (Wapet) expect the use of waterflooding techniques on Barrow Island will lift recoverable oil reserves there to more than 200 million bbl. Originally, Wapet estimated that primary recovery methods might uncover 86 million bbl. The company, after experimenting with waterflooding techniques for some time, later upped this estimate to 114 million bbl. Because of the low permeability, it was estimated that about 240 wells, or one well per 80 acres, would be needed to produce an estimated flow of 22,000 bbl daily within 2 yr. The area of the field was computed at 24,700 acres, with an average depth of 44 ft of pay sand. The project will ultimately involve about 208 water injection wells in selected areas. Wapet is currently producing at peak rates of between 30,000 and 35,000 bpd on Barrow Island.
