Argentina's first major waterflood is off to a good start in the sprawling Mendoza producing area. Argentina- Cities Service Development Co.'s 22,000-acre project covers all of Punta de las Bordas, Vacas Muertas, and Gran Bajana Blanca fields in Mendoza. Cities Service started last Dec. the first stage of the injection program at the rate of 50,000 bpd through 13 wells. Second stage will jump injection to 100,000 bpd through 25 wells. Injection was started with 2 multistage centrifugal pumps driven by 1,250-hp electric motors. Injection rate will be 50,000 bpd at 2,000 psi. Two more pumps and motors will be added for the second stage of the project. Water is piped to the injection wells from fresh-water wells about 15 miles away.
