Title: Study of the tank systems of 125,000 cu m MRV type LNG carrier (loads and stress analysis)

Conference · · Gastech Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5511092

Theoretical and experimental analyses of ship motion, wave load, and stress induced in the hull and tank system of a 125,000-m/sup 3/ Moss-Rosenberg Verft A/S (MRV) LNG carrier found that the roll-damping coefficient of a moving ship is 4-5 times greater than that of a ship at rest. MHI improved the methods of calculating rolling motion by accounting for the effect of the liquid motion in the tank. The results of bench tests using a 2.7-ft diam spherical tank permitted estimating the hydrodynamic pressure acting on the tank shell, the liquid velocity, and the dynamic force on the pipe tower. MHI found close agreement between its computer calculations and the results of structural tests on a 13.8-ft long hull model. Three-dimensional stress analysis determined the boundary-force distribution for the hold (including the tank cover). The axisymmetrical computer program CYLAN and the equator-zooming technique accurately estimated the tank-system induced stress. The results of these analyses indicate that the MRV tank design is safe and strong.
