Title: Study on the micelle formation of surfactants in aqueous solutions under high pressure by laser light-scattering technique. Part 2

Journal Article · · J. Colloid Interface Sci.; (United States)

The pressure dependence of the micellar aggregation numbers of penta-, hepta-, and octaoxyethylene dodecyl ethers (abbreviated respectively as C/sub 12/E/sub 5/, C/sub 12/E/sub 7/, and C/sub 12/E/sub 6/) was determined by the laser light-scattering technique, in aqueous solutions at 298.15 K. Next, the critical micellization concentration (CMC) was calculated under pressure for each surfactant, including hexaoxyethylene dodecyl ether (C/sub 12/E/sub 8/), from the aggregation number vs. pressure, by utilizing Tanford's expressions and assuming the micellar shape as disk-like (oblate ellipsoid) for each micelle. From the obtained pressure dependence of the CMC, the standard volume changes on micellization were calculated for polyoxyethylene-type nonionic surfactants, C/sub 12/E/sub n/ (n = 5 to 8). The contribution of oxyethylene (oe) groups is discussed. 45 references.
