Land use: problems, issues and policies

Journal Article · · Look. Ahead Proj. Highlights; (United States)

Land use in the US can be studied in terms of the activities carried out, the relative roles of the decision-making mechanisms (generally the private market), the role of public intervention in decision making, and from the viewpoint of professional knowledge. The author groups his review of major land-use-policy issues under the following topics: agriculture, forestry, mineral and fuel supplies, siting, transportation, recreation and wilderness, externalities, regional factors, and minorities and the economically underprivileged. He concludes that there are no simple solutions to land-use problems because of their many interconnections, and that they will become worse in the future. (DCK)
