Federal lands revisited

Book ·
OSTI ID:6622320
Buffeted on one side by those who urge the ''privatization'' of the federal lands and on the other by environmentalists and conservationists who call for their retention, policy makers are challenged to find acceptable land-use solutions. The author presents an overview of US federally owned lands. He reviews their historic and current uses, along with current policy issues and major alternatives for their future use and management. The commodity, environmental, and amenity values of these lands receive careful consideration, with specific reference to grazing, forestry, minerals extraction, oil and gas production, and recreation. The book concludes with an appeal for further public participation in land-use decisions and more research on land management. 12 figures, 23 tables.
