Research has been directed toward understanding phytoplankton dynamics and related processes in nearshore waters. This report summarizes work on the limitation of phytoplankton growth by nutrients in nearshore waters, the inhibition of the rate of phytoplankton production by wind and tide-induced vertical mixing within the turbid nearshore waters, the influence of the coastal frontal zone on the spatial distributions of phytoplankton biomass, primary production and plant nutrients, and zooplankton abundance, distribution and production in relation to hydrographic variables.
