Reviewed are data describing benzo(a)pyrene content in oil shale industry wastewater, benzo(a)pyrene levels found in several bodies of water in Estonia, USSR and in aquatic organisms, and the effectiveness of various oil shale industry effluent treatment processes. Treatment processes surveyed are evaporation, extraction with butyl acetate, trickling filters, and aeration tanks. Shale oils contain about 0.002-0.17% benzo(a)pyrene. Dephenolation with butyl acetate is the most efficient purification process for benzo(a)pyrene in shale oil industry phenol wastewater. (14 references)
