A method for inhibiting silica dissolution while preventing pipe corrosion for use in the vicinity of a well penetrating a hydrocarbon-containing formation is described comprising: (a) injecting steam into the well, the steam having a liquid phase and a vapor phase, and including an effective amount of a salt to reduce the pH of the liquid phase of the steam to a range of about 8.0 to about 10.0 the salt comprising a volatile cationic component and a nonvolatile anionic component; and (b) monitoring the pH of the liquid phase of the steam and continually adjusting the addition of the salt to maintain the pH of the liquid phase of the steam within the range of from about 8.0 to about 10.0.
