An internal combustion engine is described which consists of: an engine body; an intake system for controlling the amount of air introduced into the engine body; an exhaust system connected to the engine body for reception of combustion product from the engine body; a supercharger as a mechanical pump arranged in the intake system; clutch means for selectively connecting kinematically the engine with the supercharger; operating means, responsive to engine operating conditions related at least to the engine load, for operating the clutch means; means for detecting the starting condition of the engine; and means, connected to the detecting means, for cancelling the operation of the operating means for maintaining the clutch means disengaged during the starting condition of the engine.
