Texas analyst: odds favor smaller cognerators

Small-scale cogeneration units in the 5- to 20 megawatt range that will sell excess power to utilities on a nonfirm basis will represent the major growth of cogeneration in Texas during the next decade. After the mid-1990s, there will be rapid growth in large-scale projects that will depend on selling firm power for profit. A report by consultants projects that cogeneration capacity in the state will rise from 4595 to 9135 megawatts by 1994. Many utilities won't have the capacity need to warrant large-scale units before that time. Utilities are limited by federal reliability requirements in how much cogenerated power (which has a lower reliability rating) they can buy.
