Cogenerators tap hot market

Journal Article · · Eng. News-Rec.; (United States)

Fueled by equipment manufacturers, engineers and gas interests searching for new customers, consumers pushing the power profits and utilities forced to be power buyers, the cogeneration market is booming. More than 5% of the thermal and electrical power needs in the US is now met by cogeneration. Large scale cogeneration is becoming common in Texas and California. In Texas, industries with large process-steam requirements are cogenerating to lower energy costs, sometimes selling surplus power to utilities. California's cogeneration market has been encouraged by an aggressive public utility commission helping developers by setting high buy-back rates.
