The Hamilton Standard 4-megawatt wind turbine system (WTS-4) is currently the world's most powerful horizontal-axis wind turbine. It was selected by the Department of Interior Bureau of Reclamation (BuRec), as the System Verification Unit (SVU) to determine if wind energy systems can operate feasibly in conjunction with BuRec's existing hydroelectric systems. The unique features of the WTS-4 have been described at previous wind energy symposia. This paper describes the transportation and installation of the system at Medicine Bow, Wyoming. Other activities involved in the final installation and checkout of the various subsystems are summarized. Results of initial system operation are also described.
