Presidential identification and mass-public compliance with official policy: the case of the Carter energy program

Journal Article · · Policy Stud. J.; (United States)
There is evidence that the public has complied with former President Carter's call for energy conservation even though pollsters found few signs of support for the program. This study examines the effects of presidential identification on public attitudes and behavior by analyzing the factors that lead to public support of government policies. The results indicate that popular reactions and responses correlate with attitudes, and that attitudinal effects of presidential identification exceed the effects of both diffuse support for the political system in general and of self-interest. Presidential identification extends the effects of a leader's poliches because the interpersonal relationship developed between the leader and individual citizens exceeds the response of their individual psyches. 35 references, 2 tables.
