Ordered ternary fuel cell catalysts containing platinum and cobalt

A fuel cell is described having an anode and a cathode with an electrolyte disposed therebetween, wherein the improvement comprises a ternary alloy cathode catalyst of cobalt, a noble metal, selected from the group consisting of platinum, iridium, rhodium and palladium and an element selected from the group consisting of transition Groups IV, V, VI, and VII supported on an electrically conductive carbon support. The catalyst has a structure which is an ordered solid solution and a catalytic activity for the electrochemical reduction of oxygen at least twice that of an unalloyed platinum catalyst supported on the same electrically conductive carbon-support.
