The National Nuclear Reactor Safety Study Commission Act is a response to the Chernobyl accident and the need to re-examine the safety issues at domestic nuclear reactors by independent reviewers. The legislation establishes a 12-member commission whose members are appointed by the President and by leaders of the two Houses of Congress. The members will review the Soviet accident to determine if any of the design or engineering problems are applicable to US safety standards and to recommend ways to improve reactor licensing and regulatory procedures. The bill authorizes $1 million to fund the commission, which will cease to exist 60 days after its final report.
