Congressmen, DOE officials, and representatives of the uranium mining industry were among those testifying at a hearing held to review the adjustment problems associated with the shift from the optimistic plans made for nuclear plants in the 1970s to the situation today in which there are no new orders for nuclear plants. To ease the economic impacts on the industry, the government relaxed its nuclear trade and enrichment policies. At issue during the hearing was DOE's role in damaging the nuclear industry and the government's proper role in keeping the industry viable. Additional material submitted by DOE and others for the record follows the testimony of the 14 witnesses.
