Getty Oil Company's Nystery Creek leases in the TR Field of western North Dakota have been successfully acid stimulated in the Fryburg zone of the Mission Canyon Formation. The Fryburg zone is a carbonate reservoir consisting of alternating layers of limestone and dolomite. The Fryburg wells have undergone an acid stimulation program which began in 1982. This program has resulted in substantial increases in oil and gas production. Initial treatment of Fryburg wells consisted of 500 - 1000 gallons of 15% hydrochloric acid upon initial completion in 1979 and 1980. Initial production was an average of 350 BOPD/well. Production from the field had dropped to 167 BOPD/well by the middle of 1981 and had subsequently dropped to 95 BOPD/well by the first of 1983. Large volume acid stimulation began in June of 1982 utilizing stages of retarded hydrochloric acid and a crosslinked gelled water. Treatment volumes ranged from 400 to 700 gallons of acid and 400 to 700 gallons of gelled water per foot of perforated interval. Production increases ranged from 65 BOPD to 767 BOPD. Production from the field was restored to an average of 270 BOPD/well. These stimulations yielded average payouts of less than one month. This paper will specifically address acid stimulation results, job design, and post appraise the economics.
