SEAM: RX for abandoned land

The Surface Environment and Mining (SEAM) program of the US Forestry Service, which was devised to help land managers develop and adapt land reclamation strategies for abandoned mine sites is described. Land reclamation objectives as stated in SEAM are: the productivity of reclaimed land should at least equal that of premined land; reclamation should be achieved without adverse environmental impacts; and reclaimed land should be aesthetically acceptable. Reclamation projects currently being conducted using the SEAM guidelines are described. (4 photos)
