Resource potential of abandoned surface mines

Conference · · Univ. Ky., Off. Eng. Serv., (Bull.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5380526
Some abandoned or derelict lands in the United States are being reclaimed under state and federal programs in order to reduce hazards to health and public safety associated with these lands and to restore them to productive use. Creation of such unreclaimed lands is now rare as post-mining utilization of land is regulated to minimize the loss of resources, both on and adjacent to the mine site. Recently it has been recognized that the unreclaimed or abandoned lands have resource potential in addition to the standard or traditional post-reclamation uses of farming, forestry, or recreation. Alternate uses, which may require little or no reclamation, include research and educational sites, heritage preserves and special recreational facilities. Selection of abandoned lands for such uses depends upon many factors including the needs and goals of a region, reclamation costs, and uniqueness and hazard potential of the mines.
