Possibilities for biochemical treatment of wastewater with a high thiocyanate content

In recent years coking plants in the Soviet Union and other countries have been making extensive use of biochemical wastewater treatment methods. The most difficultly oxidizable component is the thiocyanate ion. A significantly higher oxidizing capacity for thiocyanates (to 1.2 kg/m/sup 3//day) was attained in experiments at treatment facilities at the Kharkov Experimental Coking Plant in single-stage biochemical treatment of wastewater with an initial concentration of phenols and thiocyanates of 900 to 1000 and 1100 to 1200 mg/l, respectively. The possibility of using biochemical methods to treat the wastewater from the Moscow Coke Gas Plant required testing, since the combined wastes, as noted, differ significantly in composition from the wastewater of a standard coking plant. For example, the ratio of volatile phenols and thiocyanates is 1:17 (it usually varies from 1:1 to 1:0.5). The composition of the normal wastewater for the principal contaminants is characterized by the following values: volatile phenols about 40 mg/l, thiocyanate ion 700 mg/l, COD 1600 mg O/l. The experiments showed that at a dissolved oxygen content of 2 to 3 mg/l, stable removal of thiocyanates is observed. The high oxidizing capacity for thiocyanates during biochemical treatment of the combined wastewater is explained by: (1) the prolonged retention (averaging) of the wastewater before it reaches the biochemical treatment facilities, making its composition constant; (2) the low concentration of cyanide hydrogen in the wastewater; (3) the high concentration of thiocyanates in the entering wastewater; (4) the high concentration of biomass in comparison with facilities where there is no active sludge return.
