Removing cyanides from the wastemakers of the by-product coke industry

Journal Article · · Coke Chem. USSR (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6417669
The concentration of cyanides in the wastewaters of coke by-product industry which are admitted for biochemical treatment depends on the composition of the charge, the coking system, and the chemical coking products recovery technology, and varies between 20 and 180 mg/l at various plants (1-3). After biochemical cleaning, the wastewaters of the Eastern and Central By-Product Coking Plants usually contain more than 3 mg/l cyanides. Decreasing the amount of cyanides in the wastewaters in treatment at a biochemical treatment plant is realized by: producing iron hexacyane ferrates using a reactive flotational separation of oils (FeSO/sub 4/ is used as reagent); desorption with sediment, flotation, neutralization, and biochemical oxidation in air tanks; chemical oxidation using the oxygen in the air which is supplied for aeration, and biochemical oxidation.
