The practice of powdered activated carbon (PAC) addition was investigated as an alternative to expand the treatment capacity of an existing conventional activated sludge process treating a steel mill coke-plant wastewater. Experimental evidence indicates that PAC addition promotes adsorption of nonbiodegradable organics and therefore, increases COD removal capacity. Moreover, microbial oxidation of cyanide and thiocyanate is enhanced with PAC addition. The existing treatment capacity of the activated sludge process can be doubled with a mixed liquor PAC concentration maintained at 300 mg/L.
