The ALEPH DAQ system is controlled by a set of protocols. These protocols are implemented both in software and on dedicated hardware. The authors describe these protocols, how they fulfill the design requirements and the specific hardware supporting them. They detail the Trigger Supervisor, its function and the handling of errors.
