FERC option on old gas could add $1. 50/mcf

The price of old gas could increase as much as $1.50 per thousand cubic feet if the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) decides to raise the ceiling on wellhead pricing. This would affect most interstate pipeline customers who receive 70 to 79% of old gas in their supplies. FERC can use the Natural Gas Policy Act as a basis for eliminating cheap regulated gas. Such a step could lead to price fluctuations and regional shortages, but it would eliminate the competitive advantage that interstate pipelines enjoy when bidding for new supplies, and would encourage the production of old reserves. Consumer opposition to higher prices and the complexities of gas-industry issues will make a speedy resolution difficult. (DCK)
