Update III. New alloy introduces second generation of maintenance-free batteries. [Standard vs maintenance-free]

The market for maintenance-free batteries is considered first; it is likely that, by 1980, 87% of the batteries sold will be referred to as ''maintenance-free''. Performance characteristics of Ca--Pb, low-Sb, and standard batteries are compared: capacity retained on standing, full charge gassing current, effect of in-car service on gassing current at 80 and 125/sup 0/F, water loss, and effect of shelf stand on gassing current. A new grid metal alloy called ''Calcium-Plus'', being Pb alloyed with 1/sup 1///sub 2/% Cd and 1/sup 1///sub 2/% Sb, is introduced. This alloy is included in additional performance descriptions with respect to full charge gassing current, water loss, voltage--current characteristics, and cycling characteristics. 18 figures. (RWR)
