Semi-submersible rig design has been evolving for several years as drilling gradually moves into harsher climes and more remote locations, such as off Alaska north of the Aleutian Islands, in the north North Sea or off the east coast of Canada. A description is given of the most recent design innovations for the Pacesetter class of semi-submersible to explore areas where extremes of temperature, wind, wave, ice, current and other hazards are to be met and overcome.
