Western Pacesetter - 4. Designed for rough areas

Journal Article · · Ocean Ind.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5312170
Western Oceanic has incorporated changes in its earlier Pacesetter semisubmersibleso produce a more sophisticated, heavy-duty winterized rig designed to tackle drilling assignments in the cold-water frontier areas off Alaska, Canada's east coast and the northern Northern Sea territories now opening up. Increases in column diameter have improved operating draft motion characteristics and stability, permitting an increased variable deck load capacity. Corner caissons are sub-compartmentalized around three-fourths of their periphery with a cofferdam and void tanks in way of the operating draft. Similar treatment has been given to the center caissons. This compartmentalization improves the rig's stability in case of vessel collision or ice damage.
