Photomosaic of the overthrust belt: western Wyoming, southeastern Idaho, and northeastern Utah

Book ·
OSTI ID:5378495

This NASA LANDSAT II mosaic was compiled from 14 separate satellite images taken from an altitude of 565 miles or 900 kilometers during the summer of 1978. It is at the same scale (1 inch = 5 miles) and covers nearly the same area as the Tectonic Map of the Overthrust Belt (1980), published by the Geological Survey of Wyoming as MS-8A, and is intended to be used in conjunction with that map. Most major cultural features are identified on the mosaic in order to provide reference points. The segment of the Overthrust Belt shown on this mosaic has become one of the most important areas of oil and gas exploration in the United States since the discovery of Pineview field in Utah in 1975. Rugged terrain, poor accessibility, and complex geology, three factors evident on the mosaic, contribute to the high cost of exploration.
