Saturation characteristics of CH/sub 3/OCH/sub 3/ and CCl/sub 3/F were investigated in the intensity range 10/sup 7/ to 5 x 10/sup 8/ W/cm/sup 2/ using a nanosecond CO/sub 2/ laser. The ratio of the low-intensity absorption cross section to high-intensity absorption cross section ranges between 3 and 6 for the CO/sub 2/ 10.6-..mu..m P (22) laser line, indicating substantial saturation at high-intensity levels. Rotational relaxation rate constants were inferred from the measured transmission as a function of pressure.
