Design HPI plants for safety

A closer, fresher look must be taken at HPI fire-protection design. The impetus for this closer look is the enormous cost of facility replacement in event of a fire, the value of hydrocarbon products, and the complexity and size of plants. An additional impetus is the need to ''pull together'' fire-protection guidelines from the myriad of codes, standards, recommended practices, insurers requirements and government regulations. This is an overview of what's needed for safe plot plans, plant layout, tank farms and dikes, spill prevention, product classification and fire fighting facilities. Details are given on the following topics - plot plant/tank farms; spill prevention and control; water system; foam systems; gaseous extinguishing system; plant fire alarm system; insurance. 9 refs.
