To protect the critical plant operating systems at its Dakota Station LNG facility, Minnesota Gas Co. chose an integral package of low-temperature and ultraviolet monitors to detect spills and fires; the devices signal to a master control panel, which actuates the 12,000 CF/min high-expansion-foam system and the 14-nozzle, 104 lb/s siliconized-sodium-bicarbonate extinguishing system. In addition, a passive protection system of dikes and drainage channels diverts flammable liquids away from the critical components and contains them in areas where they can be controlled.
