Increased Cu, ZnSOD activity in a clone of ELC has been attributed to the increased production of O{sub 2} due to auto-oxidation of a differentiation-associated rise in hemoglobin (Hb). The authors now show Cu, ZnSOD and MnSOD activity increase in ELC lone S9 without a rise in Hb content; the rise of Cu,ZnSOD activity but not MnSOD activity is blunted by a daily change of medium. In ELC clone DIB, Cu,ZnSOD but not MnSOD activity increases in culture. They conclude (1) the SODs an increase in ELC cells without a rise in Hb; (2) Cu, ZnSOD and MnSOD activity may not change coordinately; and (3) these clones should be useful to study the regulation of SOD gene expression.
