Recent US petroleum supply, consumption, and price data

Recent DOE data indicate that 1984 US crude petroleum production was 3250 million bbl--an average of 8.879 million bbl/day. This represents a 2.5% gain over 1983 production of 3171 million bbl (8.688 million bbl/day). Natural gas liquids produced at gas processing plants increased from 569 million bbl in 1983 to 597 million bbl in 1984, but was still below the peak level of 638 million bbl in 1972. Alaska has been an important producer in recent years, increasing from 0.464 million bbl/day in 1977, 1.229 in 1978 and 1.617 in 1980 to 1.722 million bbl/day in 1984. The recent increases in Alaskan production have been due to production from the Kuparuk field. Some of the Lower 48 States also showed production increases, although overall, Lower-48 production has been dropping for some time. It amounted to 9.010 million bbl/day in 1973, dropped to 6.980 in 1980, and has shown only minor changes since then, totaling 7.157 million bbl/day in 1984--thanks to intense infill drilling. Total imports of crude and products in 1984 amounted to 1990 million bbl (5.437 million bbl/day), including oil for the strategic petroleum reserve (SPR). This was 8% higher than 1983's 1844 million bbl. 7 figures, 9 tables.
