This patent describes a programmable controller for operating a machine to carry out a plurality of programmed functions. It comprises: a plurality of processor means each one for simultaneously executing a separate user control program that directs the programmable controller to operate the machine to perform a specific function. Each of the processor means having means for receiving communications from the other processor means to control the execution of its user control program; a means for storing a plurality of user control programs. Each user control program designated for execution on one of the processor means; and means for interconnecting the plurality of processory means and the storing means.
