This patent describes a data processing system for simultaneously processing a plurality of data words. It comprises a control data processor; and a data processing structure controlled by the control data processor. The structure comprising one or more two dimensional data processing arrays each of which is organized as rows and columns of discrete data processing cells. Each of the cells comprising means for storing and retrieving data words; means for storing and executing a stored program; means for performing arithmetic and logical operations on the data words under the control of the stored program; means for communicating with at least one other neighboring cell within a same row and with at least one other neighboring cell within an adjacent column; and means for communicating with the control data processor. The means for communicating comprising a first plurality of signal lines individual ones of which are coupled in common to all of the cells within the array. The first plurality of commonly coupled signal lines including: a first communications signal line operable for being asserted by the control data processor for transmitting data to the cells; and a second communications signal line operable for being asserted by the control data processor.
