Cytophotometric analyses of (PAS) positive material were made on stannius corpuscles of trout exposed to graded severities of acidic water under acute (3-5 d) and subacute (28d) exposure conditions. PAS staining of selected fish tissues was evaluated in terms of its utility as a bioindicator of acid pollution. A quantitative increase in PAS material in stannius corpuscles was evidenced with acute but not with subacute exposures to a pH of 4.0 to 6.5. These data indicate that the PAS reaction of the stannius corpuscle might provide a useful short-term bioassay of acid-polluted streams.
