US energy efficiency may have declined in 1982 for the first time since 1977. Preliminary first-quarter figures reflect a colder winter, but a decline in gross national product (GNP) and an increase in disposable income could prolong the relapse. Pessimistic analysts see large price increases as the major incentive for energy efficiency as higher household spending increases the consumption of electricity and gasoline. The author explains how energy efficiency forecasts are calculated and what Btu/GNP ratios mean. (DCK)
