Nation at the pump: who uses all that gas

Journal Article · · Across the Board; (United States)
OSTI ID:5354145
Gasoline consumption patterns are broken down by the age of the household head, household size, number of children, occupation, household income, household earner composition, region, and location of residence. Over 40% of the gas is purchased by the 35 to 54 age group, representing less than a third of the households. Consumption increases with the number of children, especially when the children are drivers and the home is in the suburbs. Affluent families buy more gasoline, partly because more family members are working and driving cars. Spending also increases with higher educational and occupational levels. Suburban areas reflect transportation needs as well as larger families. (DCK)
