The authors measure the spectral dependences of the absolute quantum yields for the formation of CO and N/sub 2/ on photolysis of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, respectively. Processes are discussed for degradation of the energy of excited states of CO/sub 2/ on photoexcitation in the VUV region. It is shown that the photolysis of molecular oxygen in the region of the Schumann-Runge continuum occurs with dissociation almost entirely to O(/sup 3/P) + O(/sup 1/D).
