This paper is a defense to an earlier paper by the same author (Hunt, 1990). The rebuttal by Waples (1991) stated that the author's original paper provided a mechanism by which petroleum compartments formed but did not explain the actual cause of the overpressuring. This paper responds by stating that it was not the intention of the previous paper to discuss the origin of geopressured reservoirs. The primary reason is that the cause of overpressured systems is normally unknown. The author emphasizes that the intent of the paper was to discuss the compartments themselves and only touched on the potential causes of the overpressuring that formed them. These included compaction, thermal expansion of pore fluids, and hydrocarbon generation from kerogen.
