This paper is a rebuttal of a previous paper by the same title (Hunt, 1990). This author feels that the original paper provided a mechanism for the propagation of overpressured compartments but does not provide an explanation for the overal development of overpressuring. This paper briefly discusses the cause of overpressuring by rapid sedimentation. This phenomenon is often called compaction disequilibrium. Under this scenario, fluid is expelled in order to maintain hydrostatic pressure and it includes both oil, gas, and water. This results in a rupture of these hydrocarbon reservoir seals and results in compartmentalization. Examples of this type of overpressuring and compartmentalizing is discussed.
