Effect of essential minerals on cadmium toxicity
The relationships between cadmium and minerals are reviewed from three points of view with respect to the required nutrients. The first is whether or not cadmium affects the metabolism and/or function of the required nutrients under normal conditions of dietary intake. The second aspect concerns the effects of cadmium in animals receiving a deficient intake of an essential nutrient. The third aspect involves the effects of cadmium in animals receiving an excess intake of an essential nutrient. No relationship has been established regarding cadmium affecting metabolism and/or function under normal conditions of dietary intake. A deficiency of the nutrient increases the severity of cadmium toxicity. An excess of the nutrient decreases the toxicity of cadmium.
