Muscle of rats fed selenomethionine contains a higher concentration of Se compared with those fed selenite. This suggest that chemical form of Se in muscle may be affected by its dietary form. The authors examined the turnover of muscle Se in adult rats previously fed either selenite or selenomethionine. Weanling rats were fed a Torula yeast diet adequate in sulfur amino acids and deionized water containing 0.2 ug/mL Se either as L-selenomethionine or selenite for 60 days. Three animals were killed from each group and the remainder continued on basal diet for another 50 days, during which drinking water contained 0.2 ug Se/mL as {sup 82}Se-selenite. Three animals from each group were killed on days 1, 3, 5, 7, 21, 35, and 49. Muscle was analyzed for {sup 77}Se content, from which endogenous muscle turnover was determined. Turnover curves were resolved into first-order kinetic compartments by a curve-stripping procedure. The data for the animals fed selenomethionine showed a single compartment with t{sub 1/2} = 40 d. The turnover-curve for the animals fed selenite consisted of two compartments with t{sub 1/2}(d) and intercept values of 6.5 and 47. The authors conclude that the chemical form of dietary Se may alter the nature of Se compartments within the muscle.
